Could I embody and unbosom now
That which is most within me,--could I wreak
My thoughts upon expression, and thus throw
Soul, heart, mind, passions, feelings, strong or weak,
All that I would have sought, and all I seek,
Bear, know, feel and yet breathe--into one word,
And that one word were Lightning, I would speak;
But as it is, I live and die unheard,
With a most voiceless thought, sheathing it as a sword.
--Byron, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Canto III, Stanza 97

When I first read this passage of Byron's, I knew that I'd found my words. You know the ones: that perfect combination of units of meaning, the sequence of letters and spaces and punctuation marks that becomes your totem.

Of course, Byron, being a poet overwrought with great emotion about the perfection of his craft (among other things), seeks one word, one mighty utterance that would perfectly encapsulate the who, what, where, when, why, and how of him. Perhaps that's the place where writing comes from: a place that has no name, that wants to be named, that compels its own naming. Perhaps there is a word for each of us, one perfect set of symbols and sound that would render us as instantaneously as a lightning bolt.

I try on a few words. )

While out doing a spot of Black Friday shopping, I browsed the stationery section of the local Marshalls. I like paper, especially stationers' pretties that just beg for the touch of a nib and some velvety ink.

Why am I surprised by what I found? )

Due to the relentlessness of life, I'm taking a bye this week. Even Paula looks in need of a nap.

LittleZ was christened/baptized/dunked on Saturday. We hosted a houseful of family and friends, ate much gumbo and cake, and generally passed a good time.

Enough of the chatter! Where's the knitting? )

It's been a wee bit rainy in these parts lately; the flowers love it, but the ground is a bit marshy, particularly the area where [livejournal.com profile] autifon parks his car. I'm glad to have a new baby to keep me inside where it's dry and warm.

I'm throwing my hat in for [livejournal.com profile] therealljidol. Weekly topics, don't care if I win, looks interesting. I need to write more. Maybe I'll learn something about myself. Sign up here if you're interested.

Now that we're (mostly) settled into the new place, I'm spending more time with my knitting and trying to finish up a few things and get some more baby gear going. The happiest moment came when I finally found the box containing my copy of Elizabeth Zimmermann's The Opinionated Knitter, which has a blanket pattern in it that I wanted to consider (Garter Stitch Blanket--link goes to ravelry, if you're a raveler).

I've been very scattered lately; moving will do that to you, I suppose, and I'm going to a conference this weekend, so that's eating up what little brain space I have left after trying to finishing up this never-ending report I have to do for work. I shouldn't complain; I have been, as my mother would say, "blessed with work." Unfortunately, I tend to reject those little blessings when I start to feel overwhelmed.

My friends and parents are incredible. We moved house yesterday and today my mom and I (but mostly my mom) setup the kitchen, both bathroom linen closets, and the dining room. My dad and [livejournal.com profile] autifon moved a bunch of things, cleaned the old house, hooked up the washer and dryer, and barbecued chicken. Kitties are safely, and a bit sadly, ensconced on their new porch outside; I'll have to tell you about Spike's daring escape attempt once we've got the cable in, which should be tomorrow night (*fingers crossed*).

I'm now working on the workshop I'm giving at 9 am tomorrow because there's little that makes more sense than giving a workshop the Monday after you move house. Overall, though, I'm utterly thrilled about the new house and already feel very much at home.

We had a great weekend traveling; now that we're back, it's time to pack up the house and get things moving--literally.

Little!Zoas appears to be fairly active these days. I rested my hand on my tummy this morning, and I felt a wee jump of skin, then another. Perhaps I should stop patting my belly.

I've got some catching up to do here on the ol' LJ. I'll be a bit slow at that as I've got a ton o' work this week and next plus packing/moving. If there's something you'd like me to see/think I might enjoy, please drop a link in the comments and I'll move it to the top of the queue.

In the next two days: how I spent my summer vacation and a bit of info about my new pet.
